Be an Exemplary Horseperson

Answer six questions that dressage master Egon von Neindorff once said will help you become an exemplary horseperson.

The riding world lost one of its genuises recently with the May death of German dressage master Herr Egon von Neindorff. Here are six questions von Neindorff once said we need to ask ourselves as horse people:

1. Do I possess that suitable attitude toward riding whereby honorable work constantly stands above the striving for personal success?

2. While building my training program, do I consider the possibilities (capabilities) of each horse?

3. Do I exclusively utilize such training methods that keep the horse united in rhythm, balance, suppleness and bend, as the prerequisite on which all further goals can be developed?

4. Do my equestrian capabilities match that which I expect and want from my horse?

5. Do I as a rider possess the feeling--which is harmony with the horse's nature--and do I, as observer or judge, have the eye for detecting when harmony is disturbed?

6. Am I, through my behavior and my work with the horse, a good example for others?
